The most famous of these unique species is the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), the world's largest lizard, which makes its home in Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Man and Biosphere Reserve in West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara province. The Park encompasses 1,817 square kilometers of spectacular land and marine wilderness, including the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Padar and Gili Motang as well as numerous smaller islands and their surrounding waters in the Sape Strait between the islands of Flores and Sumbawa.
Less than 2500 of these giant Lizards, which can reach more than three meters in Length and weigh as much as 90 kilograms, inhabit the Park's dramatic Landscape, where rugged hillsides of dry savannah and pockets of monsoon forests contrast starkly with the brilliant white sandy beaches and sparkling blues waters surging over kaleidoscopic corals. And while a chance encounter with a flesh-eating 'dragon' or one of its prey species - everything from deer, boar and buffalo to snakes, monkeys and wild horses - may be reason enough to visit Komodo, there is so much more to see and do.
